Growth I is a one-of-a-kind original figurative painting by contemporary artist Darci Lauren, created using mixed media on paper in 2025 during her time volunteering as a live painter at Shambles Art Gallery in Worcester, UK. The artwork depicts a seated, introspective figure intertwined with emerging plant forms, exploring themes of personal growth, healing, transformation, and self-discovery.

Soft washes of turquoise, blush pink, lilac, and earthy olive tones move across the surface in translucent layers, punctuated by expressive mark-making, drips, and gestural lines. A delicate stem of lily-of-the-valley rises from the figure’s body, blurring the boundary between human and botanical forms and creating a visual metaphor for growth that is both fragile and resilient.

Combining figurative drawing with abstract painting, the work reflects Lauren’s ongoing interest in the emotional landscapes of womanhood and the ways personal experiences shape identity. The enclosed posture of the figure suggests vulnerability and introspection, while the flourishing plant imagery signals renewal, resilience, and the possibility of becoming. Balancing realism with abstraction, the painting captures growth not as a fixed destination, but as an ongoing and often complex process.

Left unframed, the artwork retains the immediacy and material qualities of the original painted surface. It can be displayed as it is or professionally framed to suit individual interiors and collections.
