If Safe Was A Person is a one-of-a-kind original figurative painting by contemporary artist Darci Lauren, created using mixed media on paper in 2025. Originally developed from a life drawing sketch, the work evolved through layers of paint and abstraction, transforming an observational study into an exploration of safety, comfort, vulnerability, and human connection.

The horizontal composition depicts a nude male figure reclining on his side, viewed from behind. Rendered in luminous oranges and warm amber tones, the body appears to glow from within, radiating a sense of warmth and quiet reassurance. In contrast, the surrounding space dissolves into atmospheric passages of lilac, muted blue, and desaturated tones, creating an abstract environment that feels both dreamlike and emotionally charged.

Balancing figurative drawing with expressive painting, the work explores the idea of safety as a physical and emotional presence. The exposed posture of the figure suggests vulnerability, yet the warmth emanating from the body transforms this vulnerability into something protective and reassuring. The contrast between the glowing figure and the cooler, abstract surroundings creates a visual tension that speaks to the comfort of finding refuge within another person.

Left unframed, the artwork retains the immediacy and material qualities of the original painted surface. It can be displayed as it is or professionally framed to suit individual interiors and collections.
