Lovers Rats is a one-of-a-kind original animal painting by contemporary artist Darci Lauren, created using mixed media on paper in 2026. The artwork depicts two rats drinking from the same water bottle, framed by blooming peonies, transforming an everyday moment into a tender exploration of connection, companionship, and intimacy.

A vibrant palette of neon pinks, fiery oranges, and luminous blues creates a striking visual contrast, while teal shadows and silver accents add depth and movement throughout the composition. Expressive brushwork and layered mark-making energise the surface, balancing detailed observation with a more instinctive, painterly approach.

Blending realism with abstraction, the painting draws attention to the often-overlooked emotional qualities of animals. The shared water source becomes a simple yet powerful symbol of trust, care, and mutual dependence, while the surrounding peonies introduce associations of affection, devotion, and flourishing relationships. Through bold colour and playful subject matter, the work celebrates moments of closeness that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

Left unframed, the artwork retains the immediacy and material qualities of the original painted surface. It can be displayed as it is or professionally framed to suit individual interiors and collections.
